Dozens of female volunteers from across the Lowcountry filled classrooms at Chicora Elementary School in North Charleston on Oct. 21, each paired with a fourth or fifth grader and a book to share.
The event, called "Women Leaders Are Readers," was organized by the Charleston (SC) Chapter of The Links Incorporated. At the end of the session, every student went home with a book of their own, according to Charleston County School District.
Sherrika Myers, a Lowcountry author and youth life coach, was among the volunteers. She wrote on Instagram that she joined 98 other women for the afternoon reading session.
Myers also credited principal Monica Smalls and the Charleston chapter of The Links for putting the event together.
Octavia Mitchell Hilton, another participant, wrote on Instagram that she was grateful to take part in "this special day focused on literacy and community."
The Links Incorporated is an international nonprofit established in 1946 with more than 17,000 members across 299 chapters in 41 states, the District of Columbia, the Bahamas and the United Kingdom, according to the organization's website. Its members are professional women of color.
The district said volunteers were paired with students to read a favorite book together. Each student then received a book to add to a personal library at home.
