An oyster roast in North Charleston on Saturday, Nov. 7, aims to support more than 400 Lowcountry students through Charleston Education Partners.

The nonprofit's "Shuckin' for Scholars: A Lowcountry Evening for Education" features oysters, Lowcountry bites, spirits, live music and entertainment, according to the organization's event page. The fundraiser supports students as they pursue their education, The Post and Courier reported.

Dr. Katchia J. Gethers, CEO of Charleston Education Partners, wrote in a blog post that the future of public education in Charleston cannot rest on educators' shoulders alone. She wrote that it requires families, businesses, faith communities, nonprofits, community leaders, neighbors and people who care about children.

Gethers, a former educator and school leader, wrote that she has watched students discover possibilities for their futures because someone took the time to expose them to something new.

"My hope is that people leave not only having enjoyed the evening but also thinking about one thing they can do to support Charleston's students and educators," Gethers wrote.
